Recognition and Graduation Day with Cebu Homeschoolers

Last Saturday on April 16th, the Cebu Homeschoolers celebrated Recognition and Graduation Day for the kiddos. It was held at the Cebu City Public Library at S. Osmena.

The program was organized by Ms. Maria Martha Acla from the group. After weeks of coordinating and communicating with the other families via email, text and social media, the program came out a success.

Five families from the Cebu Homeschool Network came to celebrate and brought their kids ranging from ages  4 to 15 to the event. The kids and parents were beaming with pride as their siblings, sons and daughters showcased their talents in playing the piano to singing.

To recognize the efforts of the kids, they were awarded with ribbons, certificates and of course, medals from their respective homeschooling providers and from the parents themselves.

After the recognition, the families gathered for a simple feast where the kids get to meet other homeschooling buddies and parents got their chance to catch up and trade homeschooling stories.

Check out some more pics at this Recognition and Graduation Day Facebook album.

Homeschooling is FREE-ING

I feel that homeschooling our child is one of the best decision my husband and I made as parents.

Homeschooling is so FREE-ING. We got freed from a lot of boundaries such as: Christmas vacation is only 2 weeks. Vacations must be done in the months of April and May. Curriculum must be finished in 10months. (June to March). We pay around P25k every year EXCLUSIVE of uniforms (school, PE, other extra curricular activities), daily baon, fare or school bus, load and loads of heavy to carry books, projects, harassment of both the teacher and the classmates, bullying, not so nice peer-pressure, etc).

Socialization is not an issue (our child gets them when it is wanted =in church, ministries, facebook, etc. others do this interactions with cousins, baranggay activities, neighbors etc).

Homeschooling is not new. Remember that even Jesus was homegrown/home-taught until it was time for him to do his ministry and he was already about 30 years old then!. The financial savings part is but another plus in the rewards side in the whole idea of homeschooling and who can say no to that?

Now we can buy needed things of better quality (which means higher price), our dreams have become bigger and we can cast our eyes further than we used to. The most important: The uniqueness of our child's personality and character is allowed to grow with less common social pressures. Indeed everything is to a season so to speak..

I pray you will find the path that will bring peace and comfort in your hearts.

Cheers!

Home Alone: Never Leave Your Homeschooled Child At Home

TWO parents who elected to home-school their child to keep him away from schoolyard bullies have ended up in trouble with the law for leaving the boy alone while they worked.

The pair appeared shaken as they pleaded guilty in the Brisbane District Court to one count each of leaving a child unattended for an unreasonable amount of time and were sentenced to 18 months' probation.

The couple had opted to pull their 10-year-old son out of a state school after he experienced ongoing problems but changing financial circumstances meant they were forced to sometimes leave him alone so they could work, the court was told.

The boy had been left home alone on various occasions, usually in the mornings, between December 1, 2009, and March 1 last year.
